Peak Health, an insurance company formed by West Virginia University Health System last year, is growing with the addition of two other West Virginia-based health systems, Marshall Health and Mountain Health Network.
WVU Health System owns 16 hospitals, including ones throughout West Virginia as well as Uniontown Hospital in Fayette County. Mountain Health includes Cabell Huntington Hospital, St. Mary’s Medical Center and others. Marshall Health has 400 health care providers affiliated with Marshall University’s Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine.
Peak Health is focused on improving health outcomes for West Virginia residents and, beginning in 2023, will become benefit administrator for 30,000 employees and dependents at WVU Medicine and will begin offering Medicare Advantage and self-funded employer plans in 2024.
“Marshall Health, Mountain Health and WVU Medicine share the common vision of creating a healthier West Virginia,” Ben Gerber, president of Peak Health, said. “Peak Health really is about empowering people to reach new heights with their health, and they will be able to do so through the community-based, provider-led model of care we are building. We are excited for other health systems to collaborate with us as well.”
Mountain Health Network CEO Kevin W. Yingling and Marshall Health CEO Beth L. Hammers said they looked forward to improving health in West Virginia through Peak Health.
“Peak Health’s homegrown approach is an excellent opportunity to create jobs and keep more of our economic resources here in West Virginia and will allow us to reinvest in our communities across the state,” Hammers said in a statement.
